Ileen Gilbert, MD

"I believe patient care and outcomes are optimal when the patient and physician work in a partnership. This partnership should be based upon mutual understanding of patient and provider goals concerning diagnosis, assessment, management and education for an individual’s clinical conditions. We seek to uncover patient resources that will aid in optimizing their health status. Together we can work towards controlling chronic conditions so that the patient can live the fullest life possible. Our practice emphasizes patient self-management education and preventive care measures. "

Dr. Gilbert has been at the Medical College of Wisconsin for the past 13 years. She has developed a comprehensive program for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in southeastern Wisconsin with asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease and tobacco use disorder. Through this program, over 1500 patients have been served at Froedtert Hospital and three inner city, outreach clinics. The patients present with high clinical morbidity, but after a year of participating in the program, the number of patients reporting daily symptoms decrease by a third, those with abnormal lung function by decrease by 40%, and hospitalizations, emergency department and urgent care visits decrease by 56%. Six-month smoking cessation rate is 40% and the average patient decreases his or her daily consumption of cigarettes by 75%.  These rates are four times higher than what has been found for patients who do not participate in smoking cessation programs.

She enjoys teaching medical students and doctors how to use national guidelines to improve the health and lives of their patients.

Dr. Gilbert is married and has two daughters. She follows high school, college, and professional sports and enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, biking, and hiking.
